Spousal support could be critical for starting a new life
During its existence, a marriage is a partnership, and each spouse plays his or her respective role. Sometimes a couple decides that it is best that they both get jobs and contribute to the household finances. In other cases, they may feel that it is best to split duties, with one spouse taking a job while the other focuses on caring for the children and the home. Both choices are equally valid, and so long as the marriage is intact, it is simply a matter of personal preference.
However, there can be a profound difference should the marriage end in divorce. In such cases, a spouse who has remained outside of the workforce is at a decided disadvantage when it comes to living on his or her own. By staying home for a number of years, a person could lack the experience and skills necessary to get a job that will allow for a measure of independence. The prospect of being in such a precarious situation is quite daunting.
If you have been the one in your marriage who sacrificed by staying home to get things done, you likely could use some financial help to get your new life started. Therefore, if you have been married for at least 10 years, you may be able to receive spousal support from your soon-to-be ex-spouse. Spousal support payments, often called alimony, can be used for a variety of important purposes, including education or training to help you become a more viable employee.
