Frances Bean Cobain involved in complex divorce proceedings
The daughter of rock music legend Kurt Cobain is currently going through a divorce that may prove difficult to resolve. In 2014, Frances Bean Cobain married musician Isaiah Silva. The divorce papers, citing irreconcilable differences, were filed in court earlier this year. Now Mr. Silva is reportedly asking for $25,000 in monthly spousal support payments. Court documents indicate that Mr. Silva wants the money to put toward expenses for clothes, private schooling for a child from a prior relationship, and rent.
According to Mr. Silva, since the start of the divorce proceedings, the income he derives from his band has significantly decreased. He asserts that since the marriage ended, he has been subjected to harassment and acts of violence and has been unable to record music and tour.
For her part, Ms. Cobain has requested that Mr. Silva receives no financial benefit from the estate of her late father. But interestingly, Ms. Cobain has stated she would be amenable to receiving and paying spousal support.
It is no overstatement to say that this is a complex divorce case. First, you have one party, Ms. Cobain, who entered the marriage with a great deal of personal wealth. The spouse with significantly less wealth is asking for support. Additionally, there is no prenuptial agreement that can be used as a basis for the settlement. Given such high stakes, it may be a while before the final decree is signed by both parties.
If you are facing complex divorce proceedings, it is important to have a knowledgeable advocate on your side. A California family law attorney could help you sort out the details of such issues as property division, spousal support, child support and child custody. While acting on your behalf, the attorney could work in an effort to get you an equitable settlement.
