ADELE FILES FOR DIVORCE IN LOS ANGELES
Less than six months after British singing sensation Adele and her husband Simon Konecki announced that they had separated, the 31-year-old has filed for divorce. She filed the petition here in Southern California, in Los Angeles Superior Court.
Adele’s and Konecki’s son was born in 2012. However, it’s not certain when the two got married. The singer, who has kept her personal life largely out of the public eye, referred to the one-time investment banker who is now a philanthropist as her husband in an acceptance speech at the Grammy Awards in 2017. (Adele’s full name is Adele Laurie Blue Adkins.)
The Oscar-winning singer, known for her heartwrenching ballads, may have chosen to file for divorce here in California because she and her husband own property here. It’s also where his business is located.
It’s not known if the two have a prenuptial agreement or if any prenup they might have would be valid in California. Under the state’s community property laws, Konecki could end up with half of the money his wife has made since they tied the knot.
When they announced their split in April through a spokesperson, the couple asked for privacy. The statement said that the two “are committed to raising their son together lovingly” and “would have no further comment.”
Because California is a community property state, many couples who are entering marriage with considerably different earning capacities choose to put a prenup in place. It can protect both parties in a divorce.
However, almost any couple can benefit from a prenup because it can detail expectations about assets, debts, spousal support and more. It serves as an insurance policy of sorts. You hope you’ll never need it. However, if you do, it can help the divorce process go much more smoothly and quickly than it otherwise might.
