LIAM HEMSWORTH AND MILEY CYRUS FIGHTING OVER PRENUPTIAL AGREEMENT

Pop songstress Miley Cyrus and her actor fiancé Liam Hemsworth are reportedly having quite a row in the months leading to their wedding. The two plan to wed in the Himalayan mountains in the summer, but that could be on hold if they can’t come to an understanding regarding their prenuptial agreement.

According to reports, Miley Cyrus, who rose to mega-stardom as the tween phenomenon Hannah Montana, is worried about protecting her $200 million net worth. She feels she worked hard to build her brand and assets and doesn’t want to see them taken from her. The 24-year-old star’s request seemingly met with resistance from her fiancé, who was allegedly “shocked and annoyed” that Cyrus didn’t trust him.

Time will tell if the couple can work things out, but the case brings up an important point. Namely, that prenuptial agreements aren’t necessarily about a lack of trust. When we buy a house, we don’t do so assuming that something terrible is going to happen and the house will be destroyed. Even still, most of us choose to get homeowner’s insurance as a failsafe. We never know what life will bring, so it’s vital to be prepared.

The same goes for prenuptial agreements. Rather than signaling our belief that the marriage is doomed, prenups act as insurance in the case something does happen. A prenup can make things smoother and protect both spouses in case something does happen.

If you have a question about drafting a prenuptial agreement or you are interested in a postnuptial agreement, a divorce attorney may be able to help.
