Stevie J. owes $1.2 million in back child support

With the current economic status, health care costs and other expenditures, Orange County, California, readers may think that paying child support can be difficult. When it comes to celebrities and high-profile people, it would seem that complying with their child support obligation to their child would be easy. Unfortunately, that may not always be the case.

For example, a child support lawsuit was recently filed against Stevie J., a well-known singer, producer and songwriter in the R&B industry, by the mother of his two children. According to the woman, the artist has been avoiding his child support obligations for years. Based on court papers, Stevie owes $1.2 million in unpaid child support. He allegedly missed 168 payments as the children were growing up. The ex-wife stated that both children are in high school and they need the child support in order to save up for their college tuition.

Additionally, the woman noted that she and Stevie had an agreement in the child support order, saying that the artist will provide insurance for the children. Unfortunately, she claims that he has not been covering the insurance for the last 12 or 13 years. She is also scrutinizing the child support system and its enforcement, considering that Stevie accumulated such huge child support arrears.

Although there are some controversies surrounding the woman’s claim, she noted that she does not want Stevie to spend time in jail — she wants him to be a responsible provider for their children.

Unpaid child support in California affects the well-being of the children. In such a case, a child support agency and the government may step in and enforce penalties for the non-paying parents, such as wage garnishment, a withholding order and jail time, if they fail to pay the agreed-upon child support.
