DORIE A. ROGERS: I've been practicing family law since 1981. Family law consists of divorce, paternity, and basically any time someone's entering a relationship or exiting a relationship.
Over the years, I've seen family law change as the family dynamics have changed. And as a result, we now see dads getting custody where they once might not have. And we see moms who are--used to be stay at home now are high wage earners. And those kinds of evolutions in the family dynamics affect the judges' decisions.
When there are children involved in a divorce case, I have to decide with my client what kind of custodial arrangement he or she may have discussed with their spouse or what they want for their child.
The other thing is, even though I may not represent the child, I do have an obligation to understand what would be in that child's best interest and explain that to my client. And one way of doing that is determining the temperament of the child, whether or not the child has any special needs, and what kind of custodial arrangement would be a good fit for that child, and share that and discuss that with my client.
No matter how complex or sophisticated your issues may be, we have the resources and the ability to manage those.
